Why It’s Not Too Early to Call Patrick Mahomes the Next Tom Brady

r NFL quarterbacks. But at age 24, Patrick Mahomes is already well on his way to supplanting the GOAT.

  • Patrick Mahomes led the Chiefs to their first Super Bowl win in 50 years in Miami.
  • The 24-year-old Chiefs quarterback is the youngest ever to win Super Bowl MVP.
  • It’s not too early to begin comparing him to Tom Brady.

As Patrick Mahomes surveyed the scenes around him following the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory in Miami, he looked every inch a player with greatness in his future.

The youngest quarterback to ever win Super Bowl MVP. Even the great Tom Brady has to give him his props for that one.

Are we entering the era of Patrick Mahomes?

I know, I know. There’ll be plenty of Patriots fans who say that I’m drunk on Super Bowl euphoria. But GOAT or not, you can’t deny that Tom Brady is at the point in his career when it’s time to pass the torch.

And who’s he going to pass it to if not Patrick Mahomes?

Patrick Mahomes Is In The Perfect Place To Lead The Next NFL Dynasty

Even the best players in the league need a great team around them, and boy does Patrick Mahomes have that. The Chiefs are by no means the finished article. There’s room for improvement, but they have the foundation.

Head coach Andy Reid ranks among the best coaches in the game’s history. Long derided as the coach who couldn’t win “the big one,” Reid is now free of that cloud and is set to secure his legacy.

Reid has always been an offensive whiz. But we all know great teams need a solid defense to thrive. Kansas City fits that bill.

The Chiefs have a young defensive core built around 6-foot-6, 300-pound defensive tackle Chris Jones. Throw defensive-end Frank Clark and safety Tyrann Mathieu into the mix, and the future looks bright. Did I mention that none of the three are over 27 years of age?

That’s a frightening thought.

Add Patrick Mahomes to the discussion, and you have the foundation for a dynasty – if everyone can stay healthy.

Mahomes Is On The Tom Brady Career Trajectory

There’s a lot to be said for getting that first Super Bowl victory early.

If a young quarterback loses his first one, it can easily lead to a reputation as a player who can’t get it done. That’s a club that no player with ambition wants to join.

Players like Fran Tarkenton and Dan Marino are Hall of Famers who never managed to win the big one, and it keeps them out of that conversation of the greatest of all time.

Even Peyton Manning’s reputation never really recovered from his two losses in 2009 and 2013, despite winning championships in 2006 and 2015.

Loading video

Mahomes has completely avoided that anchor by grabbing his first Super Bowl win at the age of 24.

In his first season as a starter, Patrick Mahomes threw an amazing 50 touchdown passes, which matches the best season Brady ever had. At such a young age, his throwing accuracy and decision making are already elite.

Quarterbacks tend to get better as they close in on their 30s. It’s safe to say Patrick Mahomes has the world in his capable hands. Much like Tom Brady did a generation ago.

Chiefs fullback Anthony Sherman summed up Mahomes’ situation perfectly when he said:

“I honestly don’t know [if there is a ceiling for him]. I’ll wait to find out and see, but I don’t think there is.”

The GOAT Cristiano Ronaldo Is Redefining Greatness

the unrelenting nature of the man’s desire to win mean we are now witnessing the greatest player to ever play the game. Lionel Messi will always be the first name shouted to argue against this, but Ronaldo’s career is simply better.

ronaldo
  • The striker has become the first Juventus player in 15 years to score in nine straight games.
  • The Portuguese star now has 10 goals in his last six games.
  • Career exploits stake the claim that we are witnessing the greatest of all time.

Cristiano Ronaldo is enjoying yet another glittering season as he approaches his 35th birthday. For over 15 years now, he has been performing at the very highest level, week in and week out.

Just as you would expect things to slow down, he is defying the odds and putting up numbers that are comparable with any of those in his past.

Since the 2005/6 season, Ronaldo has never scored fewer than 20 goals. This season he already has 22.

Loading video

Ronaldo Delivers Wherever He Plays

One of the most impressive things about Cristiano’s career is that he has been the standout player in three of Europe’s top leagues.

At Manchester United, he blew up and became a global superstar. He scored 84 goals in 196 games in the Premier League, on his way to winning every domestic trophy in England.

At United, he also won his first Champions League and was awarded the Ballon d’Or.

Most players could only dream of achieving so much success. Ronaldo was only getting started.

Madrid Makes The Man

While undoubtedly hard for Manchester United fans to accept, Ronaldo’s dream was always to wear the white of Real Madrid. He achieved this dream in 2009, and it was here where the prince of world football became the king.

Ronaldo’s stats in Spain were ridiculous. In 292 La Liga games, he scored an incredible 311 goals. Again, he won all of the domestic titles, but it was in Europe where the Madrid version of Cristiano made his mark.

During his time at Los Blancos, Ronaldo and Real Madrid won an incredible four Champions League titles, including an unprecedented three in a row.

His last game for Madrid was in the Champions League final victory against Liverpool.

A New Adventure

Ronaldo’s move to Juventus is one that Florentino Perez now probably regrets allowing to happen. Gareth Bale has not stepped up as expected in Madrid, and Ronaldo’s level has not dropped off at all since moving to Serie A.

With 28 goals and the Serie A title in his first season, Ronaldo has continued his incredibly high levels of success.

His and the club’s main aspiration must be to take Juventus to Champions League glory, and many would not bet against Ronaldo carrying the club to that target this season.

Loading video

Club And Country

Ronaldo has enjoyed amazing success at club level. He has won everything in the leagues where he has played, but he has also done it on the international stage too.

In 2016, he led his country to European Championship success and last summer Portugal was crowned Nations League winners.

Even when playing with teammates of lesser quality on the international stage compared with those he has played with at club level, Ronaldo has always found a way to win.

With the European Championship coming around again this summer, it would surprise no one to see Ronaldo lead his team to victory once more.

We Are Witnessing The GOAT

The level of consistency and the unrelenting nature of the man’s desire to win mean we are now witnessing the greatest player to ever play the game.

Lionel Messi will always be the first name shouted to argue  against this, but Ronaldo’s career is simply better.

He has done it in three leagues, won on the international stage and continues to deliver despite approaching his 35th birthday.

Messi is a wonderful footballer. A magician. His natural ability is probably greater than any player in the history of the game. But when looked at as a whole, Ronaldo’s stats throughout his varied career simply don’t lie.

He is the best. And he still hasn’t finished yet.

Curtis Jones Shows That Liverpool Could Dominate English Football for Years

s best placed to lead the way. It is not just that the 19-year-old scored the winners against both Everton and Shrewsbury. It is the way he conducted himself throughout the two contests.

Author Image

 Author: Greg Lea@GregLeaFootball

curtis jones
  • The 19-year-old was the star of the show in Tuesday’s victory over Shrewsbury.
  • Liverpool’s young players have impressed in recent first-team outings.
  • Jurgen Klopp has plenty of talent to call upon beyond his strongest XI.

Jurgen Klopp made his position clear from the outset. The scheduling of an FA Cup fourth-round replay during Liverpool’s winter break was too much for the manager to stomach. The German declared that he would not be attending Tuesday’s meeting with Shrewsbury, and nor would any of his first-team players.

It was a controversial move. The Shrews sensed an opportunity. Winning at Anfield is never straightforward. But it is certainly easier when your opponents are Liverpool’s Under-23s, as opposed to the first team.

In the end, though, it was the Premier League giants who triumphed. Led by Curtis Jones, Liverpool’s youngsters sent an ominous message to the rest of England’s top division: there is more to this club than its first-choice XI.

Loading video

Strength In Depth

This week was not the first time Klopp has fielded a youthful team this season. Liverpool was forced to play two games in two days in December. Klopp took the first team, including star men Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Sadio Mane, to Qatar to face Monterrey in the Club World Cup semi-finals. Mark Critchley led his Under-23 players into battle against Aston Villa in the League Cup quarter-finals.

Liverpool came up short that night. Villa recorded a resounding 5-0 triumph. But the Reds’ starlets left with their heads held high.

They went one better a few weeks later. A superb strike from Jones gave an under-strength Liverpool side victory over arch-rivals Everton in the third round of the FA Cup. James Milner, Joe Gomez, Adam Lallana, Divock Origi and Takumi Minamino all started that match. But so too did Jones, Harvey Elliott, Neco Williams, Nathaniel Phillips and Pedro Chirivella.

Loading video

Next Generation Liverpool

This is a fantastic sign for Liverpool. Not all those who featured against Shrewsbury will become superstars at Anfield. Many will go on to ply their trade elsewhere. That is simply the nature of modern-day academies.

Nevertheless, there is real hope at Liverpool that some will make the grade. As things stand Jones looks best placed to lead the way. It is not just that the 19-year-old scored the winners against both Everton and Shrewsbury. It is the way he conducted himself throughout the two contests.

The attacking midfielder has proved he has an eye for goal. He is creative too, and he can dictate the tempo of a game in a slightly deeper role. He is also capable of drifting wide and supplying ammunition from the flanks.

Loading video

Klopp Is Going Nowhere

Best of all for Liverpool is the fact that they have a world-class manager to oversee the progression of the club’s young talents. Klopp is contracted at Anfield until 2024.

He is unlikely to leave before then. He may even agree to extend his deal beyond the four-and-a-half years that remain. Continuity is an asset for all football clubs, and that is exactly what Klopp gives his current employers.

Liverpool will win the Premier League title this term. They are already 22 points clear of the chasing pack. The Reds are months away from ending an agonizing 30-year wait for a championship crown. And if Liverpool’s young players can maintain their upward trajectory, this may not be a single-season success story.

This Red Sox Team Will Plague Fans With Unbridled Despair

ise superstar, no manager, and – frankly – no hope, the Boston Red Sox are staring down the barrel at a painful season.

Author Image

 Author: Aubrey Hansen@Words_By_Aubrey

boston red sox
  • The Boston Red Sox are on the cusp of trading superstar Mookie Betts to the Los Angeles Dodgers, along with pitcher David Price.
  • They still don’t have a manager after sacking Alex Cora for his part in the sign-stealing scandal of 2017.
  • The loss of Betts signals that Boston is entering a brutal rebuilding period.

Boston Red Sox fans had better savor the next few days. The Mookie Betts trade has stalled. For now. Enjoy it while you can, Red Sox fans. This is the last time the team will feel relevant for a long, long time.

Because times are changing in Boston.

The Red Sox Won’t Be Competing In 2020

As sad as that is for fans of the franchise to accept, it’s the truth.

We all know why the Red Sox hired Chaim Bloom. His success rate with the Tampa Bay Rays – on one of the lowest payrolls in the league – caught the eye of Boston’s ownership.

Source: Twitter

He’s here to reduce the outlay that the Red Sox have endured in recent years, and in the short-term at least, that means a lot of pain for an organization that’s used to buying its way into the playoff hunt.

Bloom’s ushering in this new thrifty era in Boston in a big way – by trading away the team’s franchise player, Mookie Betts.

Watch Rich Eisen’s epic reaction to the Mookie Betts trade rumors below:

Loading video

Don’t get me wrong. You can’t sell me on Betts being worth what he’s asking. But losing him is still an indicator of where this ball club is heading.

And that’s not to a World Series – at least not anytime soon.

The main aim of this club is to stay under the competitive balance threshold. Winning games and giving the fans something to cheer about?

Not so much.

Maybe this was always going to be the price of World Series success in 2018. But it’s a lot less enjoyable in 2020, with Betts on his way out and the Yankees just two months removed from inking Gerrit Cole to a blockbuster $324 million deal.

Boston Hasn’t Even Bothered To Hire A Manager

The roster isn’t the only thing in disarray. The search for Alex Cora’s replacement is in its fifth week.

We’ve already seen the likes of Ron Roenicke, Carlos Febles, Luis Urueta, and Mark Kotsay interview for the position. And still it remains unfilled.

Source: Twitter

Most believe the hunt is reaching its conclusion, but Red Sox pitchers and catchers report to spring training in just four days. It’s staggering that Boston has let the process slog on for this long.

To be this close to spring training with no manager is insane.

2020 Will Be A Season To Forget For The Red Sox

It’s hard to believe that this time last year, the Boston Red Sox were heading into spring training as the defending World Series champions.

By September 10, President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski was history, and the franchise was heading for a .519 season.

We’re two weeks from the opening game of spring training as the Red Sox line up against the Northeastern Huskies on February 21.

There’s likely to be no David Price and no Mookie Betts on the roster when the team takes to the field. There may be a manager if ownership can get their act together.

What a difference a year makes indeed.

The Cleveland Browns Are Already Lying to Themselves About Next Year

by the Cleveland Browns. Fans may be optimistic, but it’s clear the Browns are lying to themselves – and to you!

  • The Cleveland Browns disappointed their fanbase this past season with a 6-10 record.
  • The Browns fired head coach Freddie Kitchens and general manager John Dorsey, but their problems go much deeper.
  • Despite arriving to much fanfare, Odell Beckham Jr. could move on after only a year in Cleveland.

Everything looked to be on the up for the Cleveland Browns.

Following his impressive performance as offensive coordinator in 2018, the Browns hired Freddie Kitchens as their head coach. Superstar wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. arrived in a blaze of positivity and media coverage.

This was supposed to be the year that the much-maligned Browns fanbase could hold their heads high again. What the hell happened?

Loading video

Freddie Kitchens Was Never Head Coach Material

It didn’t take long to see that Freddie Kitchens wasn’t head coach material. He’d spent over ten years as a positional coach in the NFL.

After his brief tenure at the top ended, he’s doing something he’s more comfortable with – coaching tight ends for the New York Giants.

Freddie Kitchens is back to doing what he does best – not being a head coach. | Source: Twitter

Luckily for the Giants, the Browns already revealed Kitchens’ weaknesses.

OBJ’s Stay In Cleveland Could Be Short -And Anything But Sweet

Browns owner Jimmy Haslam would have you believe that Odell Beckham Jr. is going nowhere this off-season. When asked if he thinks the controversial wide receiver will remain with the Cleveland Browns through 2020, he commented:

Absolutely. Odell is extremely talented. He was hampered by the groin injury. The surgery went well, he’s rehabbing, and we look forward to having him and being a big, big producer for the team this year.

New head coach Kevin Stefanski also sounds positive about keeping Beckham Jr. in Cleveland. But he doesn’t seem quite as sold as Haslam.

Here’s what Stefanski said about OBJ:

There’s a standard that we’ll set and that we’re going to ask of them to adhere to those standards.

Stefanski doesn’t seem like someone who’ll put up with Beckham Jr.’s crap the same way Freddie Kitchens did.

The Browns Claim Accountability Is Crucial – But They Need To Prove It

During his news conference, general manager Andrew Berry claimed that he was looking for players who were going to be tough, smart, and accountable on and off the field.

That sounds great in theory.

But the Browns have a track record of overlooking a player’s worrying character flaws if they can benefit the franchise. They signed Kareem Hunt right after the Kansas City Chiefs released him for shoving and kickin

Lionel Messi and Ronaldo Together? Their Egos Wouldn’t Allow It

Lionel Messi, Ronaldo
  • The Argentinian superstar has made his feelings known about how things are at Barcelona.
  • His contract is due up next summer, with every top club in Europe poised to make an offer.
  • Juventus are readying themselves to offer Messi the chance to link up with Ronaldo in a dream-team scenario.

It seems the discussion around Lionel Messi and his footballing future will be a source of constant speculation over the next few months.

He’s currently contracted to Barcelona until the end of June next year, but there is reportedly a clause in his deal that would allow him to walk away for free this summer.

Loading video

If Lionel Messi decides to move, where could he go?

Realistically, there are a handful of teams who could hope to match his current $33 million per year contract, or even improve upon it.

If a move came about, it’s highly likely he’d end up at one of Manchester United, Manchester City, Inter Milan, Paris Saint-Germain or Juventus.

Although many fans deem City to be his most likely destination, despite Pep Guardiola playing such an idea down, the most intriguing has to be Juventus.

Fantasy football come true?

The very idea of having a team that includes both Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi seemed like the stuff of fantasy football dreams not so long ago.

Now it could become a reality, according to reports.

Ronaldo’s move to the Italian giants in 2018 came as something of a shock, with the Turin club paying a fee of $110 million, and a yearly contract of $35 million.

His current deal will see him remain at the club until the summer of 2022.

Ronaldo and Messi may seem like fantasy football, but it would quickly become a nightmare

Let’s put aside the dreamy fantasy of having Lionel Messi and Ronaldo line up together on the same team. That’s fine when you’re playing FIFA video games, but in real life, it doesn’t quite work like that.

Source: Twitter

The competitive nature of Ronaldo and Messi’s relationship was there for all to see when they were playing in the same league. Can you imagine if they were sharing a dressing room?

Neither man’s ego could allow the other to get the upper hand.

If Messi becomes subject to a contractual bidding war of sorts and eventually signed for Juventus for a yearly salary of more than $35 million, things could get ugly. Would Ronaldo be looking to renegotiate his deal? Or would he be happy enough to accept less than his rival?

These two players could not co-exist together

The competitive nature of both wouldn’t allow it to happen. They have both become used to being the main focus at the clubs they play at, and that would prove problematic.

Ronaldo and Messi are continually competing in every aspect. Even if the players themselves aren’t too focused on it, the media ensures there is a heated rivalry in every aspect.

Who has the most Ballon d’Or wins? The biggest contract? Who earns more from sponsorships? Who scores the most goals? The most social media followers?

As much as football fans would love to see this combination happen, it would just be too much for one club and one dressing room to handle.

Juventus Desperately Need Pogba Just as Much as Manchester United

k of creativity in midfield is as troubling as that of Manchester United. The time is right for them to make a move.

Author Image

 Author: Kaustubh Pandey@Kaus_Pandey17

Paul Pogba
  • Paul Pogba and Mino Raiola have not shown any hesitation to talk about an Old Trafford exit.
  • Juventus has been short of creative midfielders under Maurizio Sarri this season.
  • Ole Gunnar Solskjaer now has Bruno Fernandes in the side, with James Maddison linked with a summer move.

Juventus has never been too far away from Paul Pogba since the Frenchman left in the summer of 2016. Rumors have constantly surfaced over the midfielder’s potential move back to the Bianconeri, but nothing has materialized.

But fresh reports from Fabrizio Romano will give a lot of hope to the Old Lady, considering the situation they find themselves in. Romano goes onto state that Juve is looking to make another Matthijs de Ligt-like signing in the summer.

There seems a certain amount of certainty that Pogba is likely to leave Old Trafford in the summer of 2020.

United Aren’t Missing Him – Much

Pogba has made only eight appearances in all competitions for Manchester United this season, having missed 30 games due to an ankle injury. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men have missed his passing ability and vision while breaking down low-block defenses like that of Sheffield United, Aston Villa, Newcastle, and West Ham United.

While that has led them to drop crucial points against lesser teams, expected goal numbers show otherwise. As per UnderStat, United has created the fourth-highest number of goals in the Premier League at 42.56. But the underperformance of 6.56 on 42.56 shows that they lack the finishing abilities of someone like Odion Ighalo more than someone like Pogba himself. Which is why they’ve scored only 36 goals this season.

Source: Twitter

Bruno Fernandes has already made his debut, coming up with an encouraging performance against Wolves. He has come in as that creative spark – someone who can unlock packed defenses for Solskjaer’s men. While his performance against Wolves didn’t lead to a goal or assist, it shows that United might just be prepared for life without Pogba in the next few months.

Juventus Need Pogba’s Creativity

Juve are still finding their way under a more possession-obsessed manager in Maurizio Sarri. But they’ve looked more like Massimiliano Allegri’s side from the last two seasons due to a lack of players who can help execute that technical system.

The Bianconeri have scraped through multiple games with close scorelines. Against teams like Genoa, Bologna, Torino, Brescia, Verona and Milan, they have had very close encounters in which they had to rely on late rallies to win. They’ve been drab and very predictable in possession.

As per Understat, Juve has created the fourth-highest XG in the Serie A. They’ve done that while creating 41.39 XG. That is less than United’s XG tally of 42.56. It shows that they need the creativity of Pogba, with Blaise Matuidi and Sami Khedira not getting any younger.

2020’S Summer Saga?

Pogba’s situation doesn’t seem too easily solved either. During a promotion shoot in Japan in the summer of 2019, Pogba said that he was looking for a “new challenge” away from United. His agent Mino Raiola also said that his client was looking to leave the club and was “in process” of departing Old Trafford for the second time.

It is a clear indication of the fact that his heart isn’t as set on staying at United as some United fans may like. Real Madrid did make an offer of £27.6 million plus James Rodriguez for him in the summer of 2019. Barcelona also tried signing him in the summer of 2018 by offering Andre Gomes and Yerry Mina.

Why Jadon Sancho’s Rumored Liverpool Transfer Makes Zero Sense

n Sancho is set for a bigger summer move that could be well in excess of $130 million but it needn’t be Liverpool. | Source: Shutterstock.com

  • Jadon Sancho is expected to leave Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2020
  • Liverpool are one of the clubs to be hunting for his signature in recent months.
  • But the England international does not match the Reds’ famous and smart recruitment policy.

Liverpool have become known to be one of the best-run clubs in European football. That led them to win the UEFA Champions League by beating Tottenham Hotspur last season. And that is why they already have one hand on the Premier League title.

A key part of the club’s recruitment style is to not overspend on players unless there is a crisis-like need in that specific position. Their impressive usage of data and advanced metrics to know exactly what players they need helps them a lot in this regard.

The signature of Takumi Minamino was a sign of that. The Japanese arrived on a cut-price fee because of a low release clause and adds depth in multiple areas of the pitch. The fee they shelled out on him is good enough for what his role will be. The same is the case with Swiss star Xherdan Shaqiri. He doesn’t play much but he wasn’t brought in to be a regular either, coming for a fee of £13 million.

And that is why the idea of the club potentially signing Jadon Sancho seems a rather weird one.

Jordan Sancho Is Hot Property

Sancho has been in sublime form for Dortmund this season. Under Lucien Favre, the winger has contributed to 31 goals in just 28 appearances in all competitions for BVB. For a player who is still 19, it is a very scary number. For powerhouse clubs, he’s a sensational talent.

Source: Twitter

The Athletic’s David Ornstein has reported that Sancho feels ‘humiliated’ at Dortmund though. He also reported that apart from Liverpool, Manchester United, Barcelona and Real Madrid also hold interest in signing the Englishman.

Sky Sports also reported in January that while Dortmund weren’t looking to sell him in the winter, it is likely he leaves the club in the summer. They added the names of Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Manchester City to the basket.

And it is very clear that Sancho could potentially cost £100 million in the summer. Dortmund are one of the major selling clubs in Europe, considering how they’ve sold the likes of Robert Lewandowski, Ilkay Gundogan, Ousmane Dembele and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the past.

Loading video

Liverpool Don’t Need Him As Much As They Think

Fans have been constantly making their opinions known about why the Reds should sign Sancho. But despite Liverpool’s financial capabilities, it won’t match the club’s transfer policy.

The last time the Anfield side spent big was on the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Fabinho and former Roma goalkeeper Alisson. But those moves came at a time when the club was in desperate need of players in that position. They needed a top-quality holding midfielder and after Loris Karius’ errors against Real Madrid in 2018, they needed a top-class goalkeeper.

Those signings had filled the holes in the side. Since then, they haven’t spent big on players. Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane are still 27 each. They are at the peak of their powers and Jurgen Klopp’s system is bringing the best out of them.

Loading video

Replacing them at this point doesn’t make sense. Liverpool can’t spend big on Sancho to get him to play as a backup. For a club like them, it wouldn’t be the best transfer policy.

Even Donald Trump Knows the MLB’s Pete Rose Ban Is Stupid

urce: AP Photo/Mark J. Terrill

  • By almost any metric, Pete Rose is one of the most accomplished baseball players of all time.
  • He’s banned from baseball for life due to accusations that he bet on games during his time as a player and manager.
  • Donald Trump says that enough is enough; Pete Rose should be a Hall of Famer. He’s right!

Pete Rose, the legendary Cincinnati Reds player and manager, has lodged yet another petition for reinstatement to baseball.

His latest attempt for a pardon cites the current situation surrounding the Houston Astros cheating scandal, specifically the stunning lack of any real punishment in that case.

Pete Rose Has Friends in High Places

We all know Pete Rose bet on Reds games. That’s bad, but there’s one important caveat: There’s no evidence he ever bet against Cincinnati.

That would be a different conversation.

If anything, his bets highlight just how much he believed in his team and himself.

That’s why Rose’s reinstatement petition has widespread support, including from the most powerful man on the planet – U.S. President Donald Trump.

Does It Help or Hurt to Have Trump on Your Side?

Trump isn’t a latecomer to Pete Rose’s reinstatement campaign. He’s been banging the drum for the controversial baseball outcast since before he arrived in the White House.

The question is: Does support from someone as polarizing as Donald Trump help or hinder Rose’s cause?

There are fans who previously backed Rose’s reinstatement but are now questioning that stance purely based on Trump’s endorsement.

You can’t be seen backing a Trump guy, right?

And Pete Rose is a Trump guy.

He’s never hidden his support for the president. He sent him a signed ball in the lead-up to the 2016 election imploring him to “Make America Great Again.”

History Hasn’t Been Kind to the Pete Rose Lifetime Ban

But forget about politics. And forget about the Hall of Fame for a minute too. Consider that Pete Rose’s ban from baseball has now lasted over 30 years.

During that time, we’ve seen Mark McGwire, who admitted to using steroids during his playing career, be allowed to coach within the league.

Commenting on the steroid era in baseball and how it should relate to the Hall of Fame, Peter Gammons of the MLB Network summed it up:

I judge players by their eras and who they played against. I finally just decided, you know what, they’re so great that they should be in the Hall of Fame because it’s a museum of baseball history.

Should such a statement apply to someone like Pete Rose too?

Given the scandals that have plagued him over the past three decades, it’s easy to forget that he was a hell of a player.

He’s still the all-time leader in hits, games played, and singles – just to name a few of his records. Then there are his three World Series rings, along with an MVP and two Gold Glove awards.

If we’re judging players on how great they are, Pete Rose deserves to be in the Hall of Fame. Full stop.

Steroids can help a player hit the ball harder and run faster.

A betting slip can’t.
